UK Government Takes British Steel into Public Ownership to Secure the Future of Steel Manufacturing

Following the approval of the Steel Industry Act, the UK Government has officially taken British Steel into public ownership, aiming to safeguard the future of domestic steel production and secure the long-term operation of its Scunthorpe steelmaking site.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the strategic importance of British Steel, stating that the company represents a vital part of the nation’s industrial foundation. The government’s decision is expected to protect skilled jobs, strengthen industrial resilience, and ensure reliable steel supply for key sectors across the UK.
After reviewing the company’s impact on the economy, critical infrastructure and national security, Business Secretary Peter Kyle confirmed that public ownership was considered the most effective approach to preserving Britain’s steelmaking capability and protecting supply chains.
“British Steel plays a crucial role in the UK manufacturing landscape. Bringing the company into public ownership will allow us to stabilise operations, support employees and communities, and develop a sustainable, competitive and low-carbon steel industry,” Kyle said.
The move forms part of the UK’s broader strategy to revitalise its steel sector. Earlier this year, the government introduced its first Steel Strategy, backed by up to £2.5 billion in investment aimed at strengthening domestic steel production and supporting the transition toward greener manufacturing.
The UK has also introduced new trade measures to manage steel imports, while providing financial support for green steel transformation projects, including Tata Steel’s Port Talbot facility. Additional funding programmes are helping steel producers reduce energy costs and improve industrial competitiveness.
The newly appointed leadership team at British Steel will focus on stabilising operations, maintaining safe production, and working closely with employees, unions and stakeholders to build a commercially sustainable and low-carbon future.
Allan Bell, Interim CEO of British Steel, described the decision as a historic moment for the company and UK manufacturing, emphasising that the move will help secure jobs, strengthen supply chains and support Britain’s industrial future.
